Pepito Venezolano
● VenezuelaThe pepito is Venezuela's answer to the sandwich, traditionally made with beef (often shredded or pan-fried) and garnished with the full suite of Venezuelan condiments. It shares a name with a similar Mexican sandwich but the fillings and flavour profile are distinctly Venezuelan, reflecting the country's own cooking traditions.
The pepito is one of the classic Venezuelan street foods alongside the arepa. It is sold from sandwich carts called pepiteros and from casual lunch spots. The characteristic combination of beef, beans, egg, and avocado represents the core flavours of Venezuelan cooking condensed into a portable format.
Shred slow-braised beef brisket seasoned with cumin, garlic, and peppers. Warm black beans. Fry an egg sunny-side up. Mash avocado with lime juice and salt. Split a crusty Venezuelan bread roll. Fill with the shredded beef, a spoonful of beans, the fried egg, and avocado. Add shredded cabbage and hot sauce.
